Manx wrestler Marcus of Man’s return to the island proved a triumphant one as he won his match in front of his home crowd.
The only Manx professional wrestler faced off against
Liverpudlian Liam Carr who he defeated in an entertaining bout in front of a capacity crowd at the Villa Marina on Wednesday night.
Originally from Port Erin, Marcus began wrestling in 2003 and now lives in Sweden where he portrays a villain or ’heel’ character who advocates a ’Hard Brexit’ and encourages Scandinavian nations to join the United Kingdom in leaving the European Union.
Speaking to The Courier, he said performing in front of his home crowd was ’an incredible experience’.
He added: ’It is such a contrast to what I am used to when wrestling in Sweden or Denmark and makes the travel worth it to get that feeling, stepping out from the curtain, flying the Manx flag and getting such a huge reaction.
’I have to rethink my tactics and style of wrestling when in front of the home crowd. I try and implement more of a technical style and try some new moves.
’When things get tough in the ring the crowd gives you that extra energy that you need to gain victory.’
Wrestling on the Megaslam bill at the Villa Marina has also given Marcus some time to see his friends and family in the island before he heads back to Sweden.
He said: ’I had a lot of friends and family at the show last night and it was great to see them there.
’The magical thing about the Isle of Man is that it always feels like home.’
While he’s taken Sweden to his heart and loves living there, Marcus said he misses the Manx countryside and walking in the south.
He added: ’Strangely, what I miss the most is heading off on my own and walking up on the hills down south by myself. Around Fleshwick or over to Cregneash or Milner’s Tower.
’As a teenager I used to walk around these hills a lot and thinking about plans for wrestling and the future.
’I could never imagine back then that I would be doing all the activities in the wrestling world that I am today.’
