A talk on ’Votes for Women’ will be given by Mike Hoy next week.
The talk explores the story of Manx franchise reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the contexts of traditional women’s rights in the island and early medieval and modern Scandinavia, the suffragette movement in Manchester and the campaign for female emancipation in New Zealand.
In 2015 Dr Hoy, a retired teacher, completed a PhD research project with the University of Liverpool, exploring the development of education and literacy in the island in the 17th and 18th centuries.
He is currently undertaking further research into early modern Manx social history for the Universities of Huddersfield and Liverpool, and he is a lecturer on the University College Isle of Man’s History and Heritage degree course.
The talk, organised by Castletown Heritage, is free to attend but donations are welcome.
It takes place at Castletown Civic Centre on Wednesday, February 20 at 7.30pm.
