While it is not unusual for stand-up comedians to branch out into other fields of entertainment, not many can match Miles Jupp for his variation in roles.

The award-winning comedian is heading to the Isle of Man next month to compere and perform at the forthcoming Isle of Man Newspapers Awards For Excellence, held at the Villa Marina.

Hosting a gala awards dinner is just one string of many on Miles’ bow.

His comedy career took off in 2001, and was nominated for a Perrier Award in 2003.

He has been a constant presence on our television screens for many year in a variety of roles. He has appeared in some of the most well-known TV sitcoms and panel shows of the past few years, including the ’Have I Got New For You’, ’Would I Lie To You’, ’Nevermind the Buzzcocks’, where he appeared opposite Phil Jupitus as a team captain, as well as in the comedian’s staple show ’Mock The Week’.

He also appeared in the comedy series, ’Rev’, opposite Tom Holland, and also in the acerbic ’In The Thick Of It’, where he played hapless press officer, John Duggan, a government spokesman who had a habit for making highly inappropriate comments, a role that Miles described as ’life-changing .

Given his ability to portray the typical, posh middle class English public-school type of character, he has played the establishment role in many films, such as Government under secretary in the 2010 film ’Made in Dagenham’, and also in the Hollywood film ’The Monuments Men’, opposite George Clooney, Matt damon and Bill Murray. He has also had roles in films as diverse as the ’Harry Potter ’Series. the comedy ’Grimsby’, ’The Legend Of Tarzan’ and ’Johnny English’, the spy caper starring Rowan Atkinson.

All these roles mark a stark contrast from his first screen role, which was as Archie the Inventor on the children’s BBC programme Balamory.

He has lent his distinctive voice to the remake of ’Watership Down’, and will also be seen in a serious role, as a First World War Captain in a film version of the play ’Journey’s End’.

All these screen roles go hand-in-hand with his radio work, where he is a regular on Radio 4, appearing in his comedy show, ’In and Out of the Kitchen’, starring his character, celebrity chef Damien Tench, and hosting the long-running ’News Quiz’, taking over from former host Sandi Toksvig last year.

In fact, the amount of roles, both starring and minor, means that it is impossible that you have not seen Miles in one form or another, something Miles has used as influence for a previous comedy tour, ’Miles Jupp Is The Chap You’re Thinking Of’, which gained, in Mile’s own words, ’some rather lovely reviews’.

His appearance at the Awards For Excellence marks the first time Miles has appeared on the Isle of Man, something that he is looking forward too.

’I have never been before,’ he said. ’But I am expecting great things and delightful people.’

The Isle of Man Awards for Excellence takes place on Thursday, November 16 from 7.30pm.
