Another sunny Saturday afternoon and great visitor numbers for this year’s show.
Bunting decorated the packed show hall, a fantastic display of trophies and rosettes waiting to be awarded, relaxing music adding to the atmosphere and the friendly committee members, who all work incredibly hard, were joined by four local guides, there to earn their community award.
Children had fun too, completing the bumble bee treasure hunt, finding the bumble bees hidden amongst the many exhibits, the winner of which was Lucy Radcliffe from Ballaugh.
Local MHK Tim Baker opened the show and offered thanks to all of the exhibitors and complimented the efforts of the committee for keeping this parish tradition alive and flourishing.
He remained all afternoon and presented prizes and assisted with the fantastic raffle.
There were over 100 prize winners and with 72 trophies to issue, this small, fun and friendly show has much to celebrate
This year Sulby School pupils were given an onion set to plant, and a number of grown onions were entered into the new Raymond Caley Memorial Class, won by Harry Dormer, who received the rosette and prize, with Reagen Leather in second and Lily Groves in third. The local branch of the Women’s Institute also entered many classes, and it is great to see local groups supporting their local show.
The committee have a positive facebook presence and are using this to assist the promotion, as well as their colourful annual poster campaign and show schedule.
Sulby has developed itself into the ’have a go show’ with 10% of this year’s entries being brand new exhibitors, who have never entered any other Manx Show.
As a result of the positive experience brand new exhibitors have in Sulby’s Show, it is hoped that they go on to support other local shows with entries, increasing the interest overall in these important community events.
There are many varied classes, something for everyone, and a very encouraging committee, who actively assist new exhibitors, offering advice and support before and during the event in a friendly, helpful manner. The busy bees kitchen was also a popular attraction, with homemade cakes being enjoyed by everyone in the marquee outside.
Eleanor Howland won Best Junior in Show, winning the Billy and Barbara Graham Memorial Cup, with a decorated birthday cake, a beautiful allotment, complete with cabbages, cauliflowers, potatoes and a bunny in the carrots! Best in Show went to David Renshaw, a returning entrant after entering the show for the first time last year, with a beautifully carved, wooden woodpecker, who took home the Milne Cup and Merle Matthews Trophy for best in show.
Section winners are as follows:
Veg - Mark Quayle; Fruit - Fiona Middleton; Flowers - Mike Garrett; Pot Plants - Pam Gold; Floral Art - Sylvia Beynon; Soft Handicrafts - Sandra Cannon; Hard Handicrafts - David Renshaw; Art - Julia Barnes; Eggs - Sophie Cowley-Hardy; Preserves - Kevin Martin; Honey - Milntown; Alcohol - Alison Kermode; Confectionery - Paul Kelly; Junior Confectionery - Eleanor Howland; Photography - Phillip Crowe; Junior Photography - Eleanor Howland; and Junior Crafts - Isabel Smith.
The show committee would like to thank all of the show supporters, judges, sponsors and local businesses whose assistance enables the staging of the event and supports the extensive prize list.
It’s hard to imagine how the committee will top another successful show, however I am assured that planning will commence in September for the 72nd Show in 2018.
