More than 70 people took part in Saturday’s Wheel and Walk event.

The Multiple Sclerosis Society Wheel event took place at the National Sports Centre’s cycle track.

Most of the people who took part had MS or a friend, family member or work colleague with this incurable, often disabling condition.

’I am delighted that so many people, many in wheelchairs, some with mobility scooters and walking sticks, came out on a cold and rainy morning to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis and raise to funds for the local branch of the MS Society,’ said branch chairman Derek Patience, pictured above, on the right in his wheelchair.

’We hope to have raised more than £5,000 at this event, which will enable the society to continue to provide vital services to those with MS. As well as raising awareness of the condition, we have shown that having a physical disability like MS doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and be part of an event like this.

’Just one lap of the cycle track, 800 metres, can be like a marathon to someone who is disabled, and I’m incredibly proud of all those who walked or wheeled even further, plus I’m very grateful to those who lent a helping hand or a helping push in my case.

’It was a great event and one which I’m sure we’ll repeat - although next time it would be good if it was a bit warmer!’

As well as thanking everyone who took part and those who gave donations, the MS Society thanked NSC staff, volunteers who helped marshal and St John Ambulance, who were on hand to provide first aid.
