A mother and daughter both took the decision to shave their heads for charity.
Vicky Westwood, and daughter Anna, aged eight, who live in Peel, both took a deep breath and shaved off their long locks at the Highwayman pub on Friday.
They were raising money for the ’Brave The Shave’ campaign, run by the charity Macmillan Cancer Support.
They were also donating thier locks to the Little Princess Trust, which collects long trusses of hair and turns them into wigs for children who are undergoing cancer treatment.
Vicky said that she had decided last year that she would throw herself under the clippers and ’brave the shave’ early in the year.
However, when she told her family, Anna decided that she would join in too.
’I decided to do it in January,’ said Vicky, as she sat getting her hair tied into plaits.
’But Anna decided to do it only about two weeks ago. But she is quite adamant she is doing it.
’I’m really proud of her for doing it. She going to be shaved to a grade 4, so it won’t be that short. However, I’m going to a grade 3.’
Anna said that she was nervous, but she is happy to be helping people in need.
’I got inspired by my mum who was already doing, so I thought I would just give it a go,’ she said.
’I think my hair will be just a bit spiky. I won’t mind having a cold head. My mum has got a couple of hats for me.’
’I feel happy that some people with cancer will get wigs. I have raised about £190 so far. I have been raising money in school with my friends.’
After watching her mother go under the clippers, a wide-eyed Anna bravely sat and watched her long hair fall in clumps at her feet, saying that she felt fine afterwards.
’It’ll take time to get used to it,’ said Vicky afterwards.
’I’m loving mine.
’It was a nice feeling being shaved and its a bit breezy around the ears.
’I think Anna looks really cute, so we’ll get the chance to do some cool stuff with her hair when it grows.’
So far,Vicky said she and Anna had raised £660.
