Singers, poets, story tellers, musicians and dancers will all head to Braaid this weekend, to take part in one of the longest running community musical events in the Manx calender.
The Braaid Eisteddfod takes place this Saturday evening, at the usual venue at Braaid Hall, and the competition, until recently the only one of its kind on the island, will welcome performers of all ages and abilities to the village hall for a night of traditional singing and music, along with a programme of community and recitation.
The highly informal night of competition begins at 7.30pm, and will kick off with the popular round of hymn raising, followed by the men’s solo singing, and then the recitation round, where prizes are available for the best poem read in Manx, best poem spoken from memory and the best poem written in the area of Braaid.
There are also categories for ladies solo, folk dancing, story telling, instrumental solo and for the best stump speech.
It is also a regular part of the evening that the organisers are likely to create new classes as the night goes on, if anybody comes up with an act not covered by any of the classes.
This year will also see the second presentation of the Eric Goldie cup for best junior performance, which was first awarded last year.
Entry is £5, which includes refreshments during the interval.
