A new book documenting the visual history of Peel has been published.
’Peel Past and Present’ uses postcards from Ray Stanfield’s collection, with modern photographs by local photographer George Hobbs and captions by author Sara Goodwins.
Ms Goodwins said the book ’shows how much the old town has changed - and also how much it has stayed the same.’
She continued:’Peel is possibly the oldest of the Manx towns and arguably the one most dependent on the sea.
’Fishing has shaped the town, with almost every inhabitant having some connection with the industry.
’Even today Peel boasts the largest fishing fleet in the Irish Sea.
’But the story doesn’t end there.
’When holidaymakers discovered the Isle of Man, Peel’s majestic castle, picturesque winding streets and bustling port drew fascinated visitors.
’The old photographs in this book are drawn from the postcards such visitors sent home.’
Published by Loaghtan Books, ’Peel Past and Present’ costs £13.95 and is available at bookshops all over the island, or direct from Loaghtan Books at: www.loaghtanbooks.com.
