Musicians of all abilities will be able to network with others through a new group that’s being launched in the south.

Southern Music, Fun and Friendship is offering musicians a chance to perform with others and make contacts at the Hub, in Castletown Road, Port Erin.

The group will hold open sessions for amateur and budding musicians and singers once a week.

Organiser Steve Burrows said: ’We’re not offering musical performances or necessarily any structured musical activity.

’What we’re offering is essentially a nexus/networking meet-ups for amateur musicians of all levels whether they are beginners or have decades of experience.

’These weekly evening sessions will provide the space for participants to bring portable instruments (including voice) and make a (restrained) noise with each other.’

The musicians may find others to collaborate with, learn from and encourage one another to enjoy new musical experiences in a mutually supportive environment without feeling embarrassed of playing in a public space.

The first session will be on Wednesday, March 11.

And sessions will take place each week from 6pm to 8pm.

There will be a £3 attendance donation to the Hub for use of the space.

Steve added: ’Given the nature of musicians it is anticipated that a high proportion of participants will arrive equipped, but singers and people seeking collaborators are welcome to attend without bringing an instrument.

’Participants bringing electric instruments will be expected to restrict themselves to small practice amps and keep noise levels at a level similar to acoustic instruments.’

The sessions are primarily for people aged 16 and over.

Under-16s may attend if they are accompanied by a responsible adult. Participants from all areas in the island are welcome and, if successful, the initiative may be replicated elsewhere.

The Hub is in the Old Southland building with some parking available.
