The chairman of Castletown Commissioners says nothing has been decided between the board and government over plans to pedestrianise the ancient capital’s square.

Colin Leather gave an update to his fellow commissioners at a public meeting this week on the local authority’s efforts to make changes to parking in the town.A proposal has been submitted to the Department for Infrastructure over ridding Market Square of all parking and talks are continuing.

Mr Leather says nothing has been decided and many options are up for discussion.Possible pedestrianisation had sparked outcry by some shops close to the centre, whose owners claimed the loss in parking would see a downturn in business.Castletown Commissioners downplayed these concerns, stating that there was more than adequate space for cars in the town, with additional parking being made available elsewhere.A separate but linked attempt by the local authority to have parking in the square reduced to a 30-minute limit is believed to be much further advanced but a public consultation will be held before this can come into force.
