The temporary one-way system on one of the island’s busiest roads will be extended next month.

Work to reconstruct the pavement along Quarterbridge Road resumed on February 1, having been temporarily paused due to the Covid 19 lockdown.

The road has been made one way between the Quarter Bridge roundabouts and just south of the junction with Selborne Drive.

This was to be in place until Sunday February 28.

But from Monday March 1 until no later than Wednesday March 31, the one way system will be extended to the traffic light junction at the bottom of Bray Hill.

This is to enable the planing out and resurfacing of the entirety of Quarterbridge Road.

The Department of Infrastructure said the work will renew the road surface and bring it up to meet the levels of the newly laid kerb stones.

’This work is necessary as the road surface is beginning to deteriorate and this route is one of the most heavily trafficked roads on the Island,’ the DoI posted on its Facebook page.

The roadworks are likely to add to traffic congestion next month when another major scheme begins nearby.

Pulrose bridge is to be replaced in a £3.4m project that is scheduled to take 12 months to complete.

Meanwhile on Quarterbridge Road, the DoI says some night time road closures will be needed to carry out the works.

They are necessary as in places there is insufficient space to lay asphalt along a single carriageway and safely leave space for traffic to pass in the other.

Exact dates of the night time closures cannot be published yet as they depend on the overall progress of the work but more particularly are also weather dependent.
