A fundraiser held in St John’s Methodist Hall has raised over £5,000 for charities helping Ukrainian refugees.

Around 1,000 people attended the event over the day, which included coffee, cakes, a raffle, and the sale of surplus clothes (with there currently being too many donated clothes to transport to Ukraine).

One thousand pounds is being given to Centre of Hope, which is based in Northern Romania and currently operates a centre housing 18 refugees.

Another thousand is being given to Voices of Children, a charity helping with the physiological trauma children are experiencing during the current conflict.

Lastly, £3,000 is being given to a charity called City of Good – which is working on the border to provide fuel for aid trucks, as well as helping to get women and children out of Ukraine.

Organiser Grace Harrison said that the day was very busy and that ‘as soon as one table emptied it was immediately filled again’.

She told us that another fundraiser will be held on the Bank Holiday weekend on April 30.

This date was set because of her concern that the situation in Ukraine will still be difficult by then, and to maintain people’s interest in the cause.
