Despite feeling the cold more keenly after their charity shaves, two policemen are glad to have raised £2,000 for a cancer appeal.

Douglas community police officers Paddy Moore and Michael Griffiths braved the clippers on Friday in aid of Mannin Cancers, which raises awareness of male cancer in the Isle of Man and is linked to Manx Breast Cancer Support Group.

PC Paddy pledged to have his muttonchops shaved and PC Michael promised to have his head shaved if they managed to raise £2,000 towards the charity’s CT Scanner appeal.

The event took place at police headquarters in Douglas, watched by chief constable Gary Roberts alongside fellow colleagues.

PC Michael said: ’It’s a bit of a shock to the system but it went well. Paddy looks like a baby.’

PC Paddy began with shaving his workmate’s head.

’He didn’t cut my head, so that’s a positive!’ PC Michael said. ’He decided he’d throw in a £20 note to get my beard shaved off too, which I did.

’We just wished we had done it in the summer! I was paying hockey this weekend and it was absolutely freezing. I felt rain on my head for the first time.’

The men have been humbled by the donations from the Manx public, including those who they happened to meet while out on the beat. The PCs are often spotted donning pink custodian helmets at MBCSG events.

PC Michael said: ’It’s such a good charity. These girls raise so much for such a good cause.

’When I was getting my head shaved I was thinking about my nana. I never got to meet her as she died from cancer.

’Cancer does affect everybody. We don’t mind getting headshaves if it can make a difference and this is something that is really close to our hearts.’

A MBCSG spokesman said: ’We are so proud of Paddy and Griff for doing this for our charity.’
