A personal trainer has been banned from driving for 14 days for speeding at 86mph in a 40mph zone.

Sean Ciaran Garland was clocked by police doing speed checks at Hillberry in Onchan on July 22.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks also fined him £325 and ordered him to pay £50 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court how police were at Hillberry at 12.10pm on July 22 when they recorded Garland approaching in his Peugeot 207 at 86mph.

When stopped by police the 20-year-old, who lives at King Edward Road, Onchan, said: ’I was just trying to get home.’

Mr Brooks asked how far into the 40mph zone Garland had been at the time and defence advocate David Clegg said that he was around 44 metres inside the zone.

Mr Clegg handed in a letter of apology from Garland and a letter of reference, and said that his client was in danger of losing his employment if he was banned from driving as he started work at 6am.

The advocate asked the court to consider imposing a harsher penalty for the offence to go with points, instead of imposing a ban.

However, Deputy High Bailiff Mr Brooks said: ’For a speed this high I don’t think I can move back from a disqualification. I accept you were coming from a derestricted road, but as a local man, I don’t doubt you know the limit there is 40mph.’
