A team of volunteers raised more than £14,000 for the Children’s Centre charity in a trek in Peru.
They began their challenge by working at a school near Cusco by painting, decorating and helping with refurbishing the building.
Not only did this help the community but it helped the team to acclimatise to the altitude.
They then began their four-day trek along the Salkantay trail through jungles and over high passes, with views of the Andes, before finishing at the ancient city of Machu Picchu.
Fundraising team leader Lisa Motley received £14,225.20 from those who took part.
They were Paul Nolan, Irini Newby, Vernon Donnelly, Marie Jackson, David Gibson, Nikki Salmon, Phil Motley, Denise Bridson, and Yohann Bonjus and Jesse Newby.
Lisa thanked everyone for all their efforts for the local children’s charity.
The Children’s Centre has organised another challenge for 2018. This will be to the Indian Himalayas.
The trek will be a 11-day trip reaching a maximum altitude of 2,843m (9,327ft).
The team will spend two days helping at a non-profit project in Delhi, which helps poor families and offers support through times of sickness, financial difficulty and other challenges families face.
The specific project participants will help with will depend on the most urgent need in Delhi at the time. Activities at the project may include assisting with decorating, painting and refurbishment.
The Children’s Centre says that no experience is required, just a willingness to get involved and make a difference.
After flying from London participants will start their challenge in Delhi, where they will have an introduction to Indian culture.
After an overnight train they will transfer to Dharamshala.
From here they will start their journey into the Lesser Himalayan range of northern India where, during four days of trekking, the Children’s Centre says they will be ’awed by lush green forests, views of snow-capped peaks and small villages with friendly and welcoming local people’.
They will reach a maximum altitude of 2,842m and will walk about 12km per day taking around six hours.
After the trek ends the participants will return to Delhi and start work assisting at the community project for the next two days.
