Pharmacies across the island are asking people to be patient and adhere to measures put in place over lockdown.

The Isle of Man Pharmacy Contractors Association is informing residents that, although there is an ’open door’ policy, there have had to be changes to protect everyone’s health.

The association said they have seen demand increase for prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, healthcare products and advice during the last few weeks.

Pharmacies are asking the public to follow these guidelines:

l Avoid pharmacies if you are showing symptoms of Covid-19: If you have a dry, persistent cough, fever, shortness of breath or any other Covid-like symptom, please avoid entering your local pharmacy or any other healthcare setting. Remain at home and ring 111 for further advice.

l Wear a face covering when in the pharmacy, use hand gel provided before entering and observe the social distancing guidelines the pharmacy has in place.

l Order medicines as you would normally: do not try and order early, surgeries will only issue items when they are due. There is no need to try and stockpile, the supply chain of medicines to the island is currently operating as normal and we need to ensure this continues.

l Where possible contact your pharmacy by phone or by email with any medication or healthcare queries, to order repeat prescriptions, or check stock availability.

l Please have patience and understanding and treat all staff with respect: all pharmacies are under huge pressure and staff are working around the clock to ensure we can continue to provide a safe and effective service in difficult circumstances.

The Pharmacy Contractors Association’s spokesperson, Ian Hemensley, said: ’Pharmacies will remain open wherever possible, but some are having to reduce their opening hours, or close over lunchtime due to reduced numbers of staff.

’Many pharmacies are also limiting the number of people allowed in at a time to allow recommended distancing to be observed. Please be understanding of this requirement and also observe social distancing while waiting outside.

’Please help us to be able to continue to help you. If we work together we can get through this again.’
