Police are encouraging people to download a phone app which alerts emergency services to exact locations of people who need assistance.

The "what3words" app is able to locate precise locations with a unique identifier consisting of three words, programmed to every 3m square of a Global Positioning System (GPS) map.

The identifier words can be given to emergency services via phone call, who will be able to pinpoint exactly where to find casualties and so respond quicker.

IoM Police said: ’We are finding the what3words app more and more useful for emergency work. Please consider putting it on your phone. You might know your way around the island but describing your exact location can sometimes be difficult. Help us to help you!’

The app can be downloaded via Google Play and the Apple store, or by visiting: https://what3words.com.
