An exhibition of photographs of Port St Mary past and present takes place in the town hall this weekend.

Last July, photographers wandered the village for two days and snapped everyday life.

A selection will be displayed with comparative images taken on May 26, 1979, when the exercise was first held as part of Millennium Year celebrations.

’It is lovely to look back at the old faces and our little port as it once was,’ said organiser and resident Will Gelling, whose parents Denny and Cynthia ran the post office.

Cynthia and her sister Joyce also run the Port St Mary Cabaret and Concert parties.

’We were long overdue another snapshot to add to the archives for future generations to look back at,’ Will said.

’When you look back at the photos it’s a shame it was not done more often.’

The photographs illustrate the shifting sands of everyday life.

Not least this meant given the ease of taking photographs today, Will had around 1,000 images to scroll through.

’It will be great to get everyone in the town hall to reminisce,’ he said.

’It’s not just what places look like, it’s people, faces you’ve forgotten, fashion and cars.

’This is for 20 years down the line.’

The exhibition will be held in the West Room at the Town Hall from 10am to 4pm from today (Friday) to Sunday.
