The history of one of the island’s most historic and picturesque towns has been told by looking through collections of photographs and postcards.
’Peel: Past and Present’, has been released by local publishers Loaghtan Books and features a fascinating look at the history of Peel, told by combining postcards from the collection of Ray Stansfield with modern photographs by George Hobbs and captions by Sara Goodwins.
The cleverly-combined images show how much of the cathedral city has transformed over the subsequent years, from the time when the huge Victorian fishing fleet dominated the harbour to its heyday as a tourist attraction, when it welcomed scores of visitors to its winding streets and dramatic skyline. It also shows just how much has stayed the same.
The new book is a follow-up to a similar Loaghtan Books publication, ’Port Erin: Past and Present’, which was released last year and told the story of the island’s most southerly town using the same method.
’Peel: Past and Present’ is priced at £13.95 and is available at bookshops all over the island, or direct from loaghtanbooks.com.
