On your marks, get set, flip!

Adults and children took on the island’s only remaining public pancake race at Maughold on Shrove Tuesday.

Many pancakes were flipped in ’racing’ pans which were eagerly held in the hands of competitive runners at the traditional event.

The annual competition is held at Maughold Church hall and is organised by the Maughold Parish Social Club.

Each participant received a racing pancake before the club separated them into age categories.

Following this, the competitors ran up the road, tossing their pancakes at ’flipping stations’ along the short route.

After the racing, pancakes were enjoyed in the church hall.

The infants race was won by Bobby Quaye, the preschool race winner was Fenna Huckstep and Grace Kelly scooped up the first prize in the junior race.

The winner of the adults’ race was Claire Sproule-Craine, with second place going to James Franklin of Culture Vannin and third place going to Christy DeHaven of Manx Radio.

Loki Reader won the senior race.

Pancake races are thought to originate from Olney in Buckinghamshire, which has been running races since 1445.
