Onchan could be set to gain an 80-bed care home, if planners give their backing to a reserved matters application.

The application (20/00337/REM) by Howstrake Developments Limited, follows approval being granted in principle in 2018 (17/00684/A).

The reserved matters application, which following the principle application would amount to full approval, is to resolve any issues with internal layout, design, external appearance, siting, means of access and landscaping.

If approved, the five storey care home will be built on King Edward Road, Onchan. It would be built on the sloping cliff on land north of Lag Birragh Drive.

By building into the natural slope of the cliff, the building would largely not be observable from the main road.

In its application, Howstrake Developments Ltd said it would employ 24 daytime care staff, with fewer at nighttime. There would be parking spaces for up to 35 vehicles.

It added: ’There are currently 10 care homes in the Isle of Man and 14 purpose built nursing homes. None of these are in the immediate vicinity or the wider area, of Onchan.

’Therefore, the proposal would not result in an over-concentration of care homes in the area.’

The government has previously stated that more care facilities will likely be needed in the island.

The care home would directly employ a maximum of 24 daytime staff, with fewer required for night shifts.

Howstrake Development Ltd has also included a drainage strategy in its application. It stated that the buildings system would be able to facilitate a ’one in 100 year’ event.

Sewage from the building would be discharged into a new network within King Edward Road via gravity connection in the existing manhole at the top of Lag Birragh Drive.
