Marown Bowling Club has applied (19/00433/B) to build an extension to its club house on Old Church Road in Crosby.

The club said in its application that while the extension would enable it to play a form of the game all year round within an indoor facility, it would also improve access for disabled people or those with small children in a pram.

Currently, the existing sheltered seating, reduces the access along the path in front of it for wheelchair users or those with a pram.

According to the application, the proposed new seating would be fully covered. It would provide better shelter for those watching and opens up access by allowing the removal of the existing viewing shelter.

The indoor extension will allow for short mat bowls to be played inside year round, which the club believes will also allow the club to operate socially year round, whereas it is currently limited by a season from March to September.

A factor behind the plans, is the clubs expansion in number.

In its application, the club said that, in the past three years, it has seen an increase in members of all ages, from five-year-olds all the way up to its oldest member, centenarian Bert Winckle.

The proposed extension would be built overlooking the bowling green next to the existing nursery store, behind the changing rooms and shower block.

This area would provide a viewing space in the playing season and be where the indoor mat bowls would be played during the off-season.

The extension would be built to the same height as the existing club house and would not affect the rain water drains or the number of car parking spaces available to users of the club house, currently 10 with a further 30 a short distance away.
