Plans have been submitted to demolish the former Waterfall Hotel at Glen Maye.

Applicant Jim Limited has applied (17/01189B) to flatten the pub, which closed three years ago, and replace it with four terraced houses.

The Waterfall and its beer garden was once a popular spot for visitors to the nearby glen.

But the planning application states that multiple previous attempts over recent years to make the business work have proved to be unsuccessful.

It says the catering industry has taken a ’different route’ over the last 10 years. People are not going out so much to eat and drink and if they do, it is to one of the main hubs for ease of getting home.

’Unfortunately people are not going to commute out to Glen Maye when there are closer locations,’ it states, adding that the village is not of a sufficient size to sustain a public bar in high or low season seven days a week and there is little passing trade.

It cites the recent closure of the Liverpool Arms in Baldrine in a similar way as a sign of the times.

The application says the building has slowly crept into a bad state of decay and the internal walls, floors and roof construction are not up to current building regulation standards.

’It is deemed that demolition and construction of new would be the most practical, feasible and efficient for both applicant, surroundings and potential purchasers,’ it adds.

Each of the proposed four-bedroom terraced houses would have an integral garage and a garden to the rear and small one to the front together with a driveway.
