The Department for Enterprise has submitted a bid for temporary tourist accommodation to be run by Duke Events for this year’s Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT.

The application (20/00255/B) is for 168 units to be located on the former Victoria Road prison site in Douglas.

The DfE originally appplied for the area to be used as temporary accommodation for the TT too but amended the bid following the event’s cancellation due to coronavirus fears.

In its bid for the site, the DfE, which organises the TT and the MGP, said that it has agreed terms to lease the site from the Department of Home Affairs, which still owns the land.

In the application it said: ’The need for accommodation had been identified with official TT sponsors highlighting the lack of available accommodation during the TT period for their guests who want to be near the paddock but not sleeping in a tent.’

There had previously been an arrangement with Snoozebox in Noble’s Park. However the company which was providing this service has ceased trading.

Duke previously ran the site during the 2019 TT when it set up a total of 150 units.

During 2019, it reported a 61% occupancy rate, described as ’encouraging’.

If approved, the site would be in place from August 21 to September 6. These dates include time to set up and remove the units, which come equipped with water and electrical supplies and waste water outlets which will be directed into the existing foul manholes.

Guests would be able to have a continental breakfast in the site’s marquee/reception area. No alcohol would be sold on-site and there are no plans for music or performance events.

Pedestrians would be able to access the site from Upper Duke Road and Victoria Road.the existing road access.
