The company that objected to Hooded Ram receiving planning permission for its Douglas brewery is now appealing against the decision to grant it.

Riverside Apartments Management Ltd objected to the brewery at The Depot, Leigh Terrace, on the south side of the bridge that links the North and South Quays at the railway station end of the harbour.

Hooded Ram had operated the premises as a brewery since 2017, but earlier this year it discovered that the building did not have the correct designation status and Hooded Ram needed to change its use from a light industrial premises - its previous designation - to that of a brewery.

During the application process, Riverside Apartments Management Ltd objected to approval being given.

They said that ’the layout shows that the building has the potential to be an operation of considerable size, greater than the lightweight craft brewery suggested’.

And the management company also raised concerns about Hooded Ram offering guided tours.

It felt the area was not appropriate for a large number of people arriving and leaving the site and wanted to see more defined opening hours for the brewery.

Despite this, Hooded Ram was given the green light by government planners last month.

But Riverside Apartments Management Ltd has now appealed against the decision of the planning committee.

In its appeal, it said: ’We believe, and intend to show, that the decision to approve was incorrect in its assessment and, as presented, the application does not comply with the strategic policy relating to the relationship with Riverside Apartments.’

Planners will hear the appeal at a later date.
