Revised plans have been submitted for a £3.5m holiday lodge development at Glen Truan.
Businessman John Morphet’s Pure Leisure Group have submitted plans for 55 timber holiday lodges on part of the golf course (17/00956/B).
The application also seeks consent to convert and extend existing farm buildings to create a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar and to convert a barn into a pro-shop and changing rooms.
But concerns were raised at public meetings held in October about concerns over the potential impact on the environment, given the development’s close proximity to the Ayres nature reserve.
Manx National Heritage objected to the application, claiming a full environmental impact study had not been carried out.
Now the Pure Leisure Group has submitted revised plans, which included an amended environmental impact assessment.
That assessment concludes that the proposals will not result in any significant negative impact on the character of the landscape or visual environment.
It says there may be some impact on ecological features during construction and operation but with appropriate measures there would be no residual effect - and suggest enhancements could actually boost biodiversity.
But the application has prompted scores of objections including a petition against the ’massive development at Glen Truan’.
MNH’s concerns have been three-fold - in relation to visual impact, natural heritage and cultural heritage.
It says the dark skies must be protected for stargazers and while Glen Truan does not directly adjoin the Ayres nature reserve, development could have a significant impact in terms of disturbance to wildlife.
Other objectors have likened the scheme to static caravan sites that monopolise coastal areas of Wales and Cornwall.
But supporters pointed out the plan is for high quality lodges not static caravans and the investment would provide a big boost to the economy.
