Finch Hill Bowling Club is holding its annual open day this weekend.

And the event comes as the club gets to hear whether or not the site will be earmarked for redevelopment as part of the Eastern Area Plan.

A public consultation on the Draft Area Plan for the East is scheduled to be launched today (Friday).

The area, in Douglas, is bordered by Westmoreland Road, Kensington Road and Grosvenor Road which contains Finch Hill Bowling Club, Douglas Lawn Tennis Club and the basketball court. It provides an open green space in one of the densest urban spaces in the island.

It was labelled as a potential reserve site for housing development in an assessment carried out in November 2016.

The 2.46-hectare brownfield site was deemed suitable for housing as it is situated in a predominantly residential area, with existing access, good transport links and is well-served by facilities.

But it has a number of different uses and businesses which are unlikely to cease within the plan period and it is not clear whether agreement could be reached with all the landowners, the planning officer concluded.

Ironically, perhaps, Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas, who is leading the Area Plan consultation, will be officially opening the open day on Sunday.

The event, which runs from 1pm to 4pm, will allow visitors to find out about the facilities on offer and learn more about the park’s Victorian pavilion.

The open day will include the chance to try out bowls, snooker, pool and tennis.

Equipment will be supplied and club members will be on hand to give advice.

There will also be a craft fair, book stalls and a raffle.

David Craig will be reading tarot cards and music entertainment will be provided by Tenors and Harmony, Malcolm Black and Pam Parkinson

Refreshments will be available.
