Hundreds of children have been learning about personal well-being ranging from online security to safety in the home.

The week-long project saw year six pupils (ages 10 and 11) from across the island’s primary schools attend the annual Crucial Crew programme, held at University College Isle of Man, in Douglas.

Interactive performances, presentations, workshops and demonstrations were delivered by a number of organisations and businesses including police, fire service, coastguard, St John Ambulance, Manx Utilities, Manx Telecom and the road safety team.

The aim was to highlight serious messages about safety in a fun and engaging way.

They covered topics including safety in the home, first aid, bus evacuation and how to respond in an emergency, including when to call 999.

Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Alison Cottier, PR manager at Manx Utilities, said: ’This is all about putting across some serious messages but in a fun and light-hearted way.

’Since Crucial Crew started over a quarter of a century ago more than 20,000 children have benefited from the advice and guidance that we give them.’

She added: ’It’s never too early to learn these potentially life-saving skills.’

This year was the 26th year of Crucial Crew.

Alison said the organising committee has always been impressed by the understanding and engagement of children taking part.

She thanked everyone who supported the programme: the Department for Education, Sport and Culture, Manx Gas, Davison’s Ice Cream and the University College.
