Motorists passing through Kirk Michael got a stand out message from students and police this week.

Michael Schoolstudents and police lined up on the village’s streets to carry out an important campaign asking drivers to be careful.

The year six students (ages 10 and 11) personally delivered their hand-written posters, which gave messages ’20 is plenty’, ’A little care makes accidents rare’ and ’Keep in mind that children could get hurt’ to drivers who were randomly picked out by police.

This was the first time police constable Adam Callister has worked with the students. He was there to safely pull motorists to the side on Monday to help deliver the message.

He said: ’It was great, the kids seemed to love it and most motorists were quite receptive to it. I’ve only recently moved out to Kirk Michael from Peel police station and we are all assigned to a school. I’ve been looking at doing something with the Kirk Michael students and this campaign, which has been done before in the past, gave us an opportunity to raise awareness.’

He explained it’s especially important to deliver the message as the winter months are making the morning and nights darker.

’About six months ago a lollipop man at the school was nearly knocked over by a car. Someone hadn’t seen him. He’s quite keen to say to people "slow down",’ he said.

On the day the students were also shown how the laser guns work when monitoring driver’s speed.

’I’m looking to do something again, something similar,’ PC Callister added.

The initiative ran for an hour near the school on the Main Road.
