Police issue fresh update on road closures after fire station blaze

Roads around Isle of Man Airport have reopened following the major fire at Castletown and Malew Fire and Ambulance Station.

Police have confirmed that all roads in and around Ronaldsway Airport are now open, including the A5 between Ballasalla and Castletown.

People travelling to or from the airport can now use the usual routes.

The only remaining closure is the access road to the industrial estate opposite the airport, which serves the combined fire and ambulance station.

Police said the temporary closure was allowing emergency crews to safely complete their operations and was expected to be lifted shortly.

Earlier, the A5 next to the airport was closed as firefighters tackled the blaze, with motorists advised to avoid the area and use the Castletown bypass.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen across the south of the island, while police advised people in the area to stay indoors and close their windows where possible to avoid smoke inhalation.

Police previously said there was no direct fire risk to members of the public and no injuries had been reported.

In their latest update, police thanked the public for their patience and cooperation while emergency services dealt with the incident.

They said: ‘Your support has assisted emergency services in resolving the situation safely and efficiently, without further incident.’
