The police have published Facebook posts in both Russian and Ukrainian, in response to reports of Russian residents in the island receiving abuse.
The police said: ’We want to reiterate that we have no issues with our Russian speaking residents, and that we are here for them and they can contact us if required.
’Likewise, Ukrainian residents of the Isle of Man will also be concerned about the current situation and we want to make sure they know how to contact us if they have any concerns.’
The original statement to Russian and Ukranian residents reads: ’We understand that there are many events going on in the world right now that may cause you anxiety and concern.
’We want you to feel safe in the Isle of Man. For the Isle of Man police force, you are an integral part of our community. Please contact us if you need our assistance.’ I
The post in Ukranian was accompanied by a Ukranian flag-themed image.
The police also noted that while the automatic Facebook translation of the posts back to English (and then viewed by English-speaking Facebook) may have been incorrect, but that they had enlisted the help of Russian and Ukrainian speakers to compose their original post and so it would have been accurate.
