Advocate Damian Ciappelli is standing for Douglas Central in September’s general election.
Mr Ciappelli, son of retired restaurateur Vincent Ciappelli of the Palace Hotel and Waterfront Restaurant, says he has had an interest in local politics since he helped his uncle David Corlett become MHK in North Douglas 30 years ago.
His announcement means that there will definitely be an election in the constituency.
So far only two candidates had announced they were standing. They are Ann Corlett and Chris Thomas, who are both defending their seats.
Mr Ciappelli says he would pursue policies to ensure a sustainable future for young people, help for working families in need of housing and childcare, and the provision of frontline services for our senior citizens.
In terms of the economy, Mr Ciapelli says he would seek to ’promote both traditional industries and new sustainable green and tech jobs to replace the jobs lost in banking, e-gaming and other sectors and to ensure that the island remains a tax competitive jurisdiction’.
He told us he would also ’urgently address the government’s overspending and borrowing’ and review the ’size and scope’ of the public sector as well as the ’gross mismanagement’ of major capital projects like Douglas Promenade.
Mr Ciapelli said he would also like to see the island’s ’large swathes’ of deteriorating roads and pavements fixed, and more investment in Douglas car parking.
He also wants to see the government take control of significant air routes, such as Heathrow.
Are you planning to stand in the general election? We won’t know you plan to unless you tell us!
