A candlelit vigil which took place in Douglas on Thursday evening saw an outpouring of support for the people of Ukraine.

It saw Villiers Square lit up in Ukraine’s national colours as a sign of solidarity.

The Chief Minister, Lieutenant Governor and several MHKs went.

Manx charity Hands of Hope, which is helping to provid shelter and care to those fleeing Ukraine, invited donations.

Event organiser Claire Christian MHK said: ‘I am lost for words. £706 was raised tonight for Hands of Hope, in half an hour, to support the community of Ukraine! The Manx public are amazing!’

A prayer was sung in Manx Gaelic by the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh choir, followed by a short address by Raina Chatel, the Mayor of Douglas.

One horn was sounded to mark the beginning of a minute’s silence, which was concluded by the Ukrainian National Anthem played by the Manx Youth Band and the Manx Concert Brass.

Karolina Davison also addressed the gathered crowds.

Last weekend, the family business sold out of its ‘we support Ukraine’ lemon meringue ice cream in Peel.

All proceeds have been donated to help ‘raise funds for Ukrainian orphanages and the proud people of Ukraine who have been displaced by this ludicrous war that Russia has forced them into’.
