Concerns about advertising around the TT course were raised in Tynwald last week.

Julie Edge (LibVannin, Onchan) asked Economic Development Minister Lawrence Skelly what were the rules on advertising and scaffolding around the Mountain course during the races.

Mr Skelly said trackside advertising, within 100 metres of the course during racing periods, was licensed under the Control of Advertising Act.

’The act prohibits any advertising within 100 metres of any highway which forms part of the road-racing course closed to the public by virtue of an order made under the Road Races Act 2016, unless licensed by the department and subject to any conditions the department may impose,’ he added.

The restrictions only applied in the week leading up to and during the TT, plus other race periods. Outside those times, no restrictions applied.

Ms Edge said she had been contacted by landowners concerned that, while they were happy to allow scaffolding to go up in their fields, the people being granted the licences to advertise were not making contact with them.

Mr Skelly said the department was grateful for landowners’ co-operation, adding: ’If there is any misuse or damage to their land, please ask them to contact the department.’
