Fancy a job where you enact laws, get paid £108,208 and get a big free house thrown in?
That’s what is up for grabs when the next Lieutenant Governor is appointed.
The current governor, Sir Richard Gozney, retires from the position in August - and the government is asking for people interested in the job to apply for it now.
The governor is the Queen’s representative and the role is more ceremonial these days. In the past the incumbent wielded real political power.
The job advertisement, currently on the government’s website, says would-be applicants where the Isle of Man is.
’The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency centrally located in the Irish Sea between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales,’ it says.
’The governor is required to live in the island and play a full and active part in Manx life, with particular emphasis on community and charitable affairs,’ it goes on.
The role involves working with the government to promote the Island’s interests at public and social events, representing the Queen on ceremonial occasions and hosting Royal and VIP visits at the official residence, Government House.
The Lieutenant Governor performs a range of executive functions and to exercise delegated authority to give Royal Assent to primary legislation brought forward by Tynwald.
Last year, Sir Richard declared a state of emergency to pave the way for lockdown.
The successful candidate will be ’diplomatic and tactful in the discharge of official duties, and act as a discreet and lucid communicator to the Isle of Man and UK Governments, paying close attention to local political and societal sensitivities and protocols’.
