The Isle of Man’s constitutional relationship with the United Kingdom will be the subject of a presentation and discussion at a public meeting later this month.

The panel will comprise Peter Edge, professor of law at Oxford Brookes University, Professor Claire de Than, deputy directpr of the Institute of Law in Jersey and co-dirctor of the Centre for Law, Justice and Journalism at City University and local advocate Paul Beckett.

The event, organised by the Positive Action Group, comes in the wake of the Brexit debate and the spotlight that has shone on the lack of a written constitution to which a citizen can refer.

As the PAG puts it: ’Like the UK, the Isle of Man muddles through with a jumble of precedent and convention.’

A PAG spokesman said: ’In arranging over 100 public meetings, we have never assembled such a distinguished panel of experts. The topic is relevant to current political turmoil brought about by Brexit.

’We have no codified constitution. We rely on precedent and convention. Is that sensible? What would change look like? Could this be prove our "constitutional moment"’

Prof Edge will provide a broad perspective on constitutions followed by Prof deThan who will explain a perspective from Jersey.

Mr Beckett will then introduce the concept of independence for the Isle of Man.

The event takes place on Monday, April 29, at the Manx Legion Club, Market Hill, Douglas.

Admission is free.
