An MHK has suggested having a national holiday on election days to try to boost dwindling voter turnout.
Lawrie Hooper says it might encourage those with busy working lives to engage with the democratic process, and could raise the profile of elections.
Later today in the House of Keys he’ll ask the Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas MHK whether the ’day off’ proposal has been considered.
The Ramsey member believes local authority contests should also take place on the same day as national elections.
The Cabinet Office held a consultation on electoral reform last year and is understood to be formulating proposals designed to encourage voters.
