A militant group campaigning against abortion law reform is visiting the Isle of Man from the UK today (Tuesday).

The ’Centre for Bioethical Reform’ is holding what it calls ’an outdoor pro-life public education and information project’ known as ’Abort67’.

Protests outside abortion clinics in the UK have been held as part of Abort 67.

The visit to the island is part of what it calls an ’Awakening Tour’.

The group will use ’graphic banners’ showing photographs of living and aborted embryos and foetuses.

CBR UK will have a display in Regent Street in Douglas town centre on Wednesday, December 13, at 12.30 to 2.20pm.

Additionally, CBR UK will hold an Awakening Presentation at Our Lady, Star of the Sea and St Maughold Church, Queen’s Promenade, Ramsey, on Tuesday at 7.30-9.30pm.

Abort67 says it is non-religious.

Abortion is in the news in the Isle of Man because of a private member’s bill introduced by Dr Alex Allinson MHK to reform the law.

Dr Allinson’s proposed law would see abortion on request up to 14 weeks and terminations available up to 24 weeks if there are serious health concerns, serious social grounds or severe foetal abnormalities.

The consultation on the draft Abortion Reform Bill saw an overwhelming majority of people who responded are supporting a call for terminations on request up to 14 weeks’ pregnancy.

In total, 3,644 individual submissions were received including 24 from groups and professional organisations.

An overwhelming majority - 87% (3,171 respondents) agreed a woman should have the choice to request an abortion up to 14 weeks.

A total of 84.7% agreed a rape victim should be able to request an abortion without reporting the offence.

Some 81.5% agreed that a woman should be able to request a termination at any stage of the pregnancy, including after 24 weeks, if the foetus has a fatal abnormality.

A total of 73.2% thought that there are circumstances in which an abortion should be provided after the 24th week.
