An MHK wants to shorten the summer recess for Tynwald.

Middle MHK Bill Shimmins wants Tynwald to return from its summer break in September, rather than October.

The island’s parliament reconvenes today (Tuesday), sitting for the first time since early July.

Traditionally, the final sitting of the parliamentary year is held within a week, or slightly longer, of the Tynwald Day ceremony, which normally takes place on July 5.

Parliament is then in recess until the third Tuesday in October, a gap of three months. But Mr Shimmins has put a motion before today’s Tynwald sitting calling for standing orders to be amended so that the only month in which there is no Tynwald sitting would be August.

For the first time, this year, Tynwald continued to take questions for written answer over the summer, as they did not require a sitting to be held.

The written answers to the questions were distributed on the third Tuesday of August and September.
