Chief Minister Howard Quayle invoked the spirit of Winston Churchill when he was asked in the House of Keys to give further reaction to Boris Johnson’s election victory in the UK.
Mr Quayle said that he expected the UK Prime Minister to move quickly on Brexit and there would be a ’significant amount’ of work in the coming months.
Opting for a choice of historical figure to quote, of whom Mr Johnson would no doubt approve, Mr Quayle said: ’To quote Churchill, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."’
The Chief Minister added: ’The island’s links to the United Kingdom are precious and it is vital that the UK Government and the Westminster Parliament are both aware of the island’s interests as the UK negotiates its future relationship with the European Union and the rest of the world.
’We will also continue to work to ensure our important contribution to the United Kingdom is understood.
’We have developed strong relationships across the UK political parties. We will now be working to build on these and develop new relationships in the context of the new political landscape in Westminster.’
The Conservative Party’s win looks set to give Boris Johnson the strength of position to push through his own version of Brexit.
Mr Quayle told MHKs that he expected to next be in Westminster in January, when he hoped to meet a minister from the Brexit department.
The Churchill quote comes from a speech he made in 1942, after the defeat of German forces at Alamein.
