The setting of speed limits needs to be evidence-based, according to Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer.
He was responding to claims in Tynwald that many people were unimpressed at the response from government when requests were made for new speed limits.
Bill Shimmins (Middle) asked him what the Department of Infrastructure would do to address the ’frustration’ felt by residents.
Mr Harmer said the new road safety strategy would be brought to Tynwald ’shortly’.
’I think the key basis of this going to be evidence-based, data and collection and working with all those residents,’ he said.
’The strategy will be around actually delivering real change and reductions in injuries.
;I am comfortable that that strategy can actually deliver real change and real benefits.’
He confirmed that, while the law did not currently provide for local authorities to set speed limits in their areas, the Department of Infrastructure did consult with them via traffic management liaison groups.
