A Tynwald select committee looking at poverty will hear from two experts.

Baroness Philippa Stroud and Matthew Oakley of the Social Metrics Commission (SMC) will give evidence on Monday at 10.30am.

Baroness Stroud is the chief executive of the Legatum Institute, and a co-founder and former executive director of the think tank, the Centre for Social Justice.

She founded the SMC, a body specifically aimed at developing new measures of poverty for the UK.

Matthew Oakley is from WPI Economics, an consultancy specialising in using economic research and data analysis to lead and inform public policy debates.

The aim of the session is to increase awareness and understanding of the SMC approach, as part of the committee’s evaluation, and to discuss whether and how it could be applied here.

The committee consists of Juan Watterson SHK, Tanya August-Hanson MLC and Jason Moorhouse MHK.

A spokesman said: ’We have chosen to look at the SMC’s definition specifically as it looks at total available resources, unavoidable costs including disability, housing, childcare and debt, equivalised for family size. It is not a simple measure, but a comprehensive one.’

The public session takes place) in the Legislative Council Chamber, Legislative Buildings, Bucks Road, Douglas.
