A famous Manx author has been acknowledged in a new set of stamps which celebrate 90 years of the Oscars and ’talkies’.
The Isle of Man Post Office has released a collection of six stamps that feature actors and classic silent films, such as director Alfred Hitchcock’s 1929 drama ’The Manxman’, adapted from Sir Thomas Hall Caine’s work.
The new stamps have received positive responses from personalities of the international entertainment industry, including Hollywood producer Matthew Dunne.
Maxine Cannon, Isle of Man stamps and coins general manager, said: ’Over the years the island has been proud to be called home to many incredible talents in the creative industries, and Hall Caine is one of the most prominent.
’We are very pleased to issue these stamps to recognise his work and the impact he has made in the literary and film world locally, as well as globally.
’The introduction of these stamps coincides with the 90th anniversary of "talking pictures" and the Academy Awards - which is known worldwide for recognising excellence in cinematic achievements and inspiring fresh and upcoming talents.
’We hope that by looking back at the great classics by Caine, we can also inspire a new generation of young and talented individuals from the island,’ she added.
Caine, who died in 1931, was a popular writer in his time and achieved international literary celebrity status after selling millions of books worldwide.
Many of his books were adapted for screenplay, mainly silent films, more than half of which were filmed in the island.
Producer Matthew Dunne, recognised for his work in War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014 and X-Men: First Class in 2011, said, ’What great stamps - just an incredible way of remembering those movie stars who went before.’
The collection has also gained interest on social media with influencers such as Sherry Snyder, an actress, writer and Barbara La Marr’s biographer, sharing the images of the stamps and commenting on Twitter.
The Post Office Films of Hall Caine stamp collection is now available to buy at Douglas and Ramsey post offices, postal order, telephone 698430 or online at www.iompost.com/hall-caine
