Three Manx pubs are toasting their success in this year’s Campaign for Real Ale awards.

The White House in Peel, won the Camra Isle of Man 2018 Pub of the Year Award, with The Albert in Port St Mary and The Prospect in Douglas both joint runners-up.

There are more than 80 pubs in the island serving real ale, cider and perry.

Through the Pub of the Year Award, Camra branches throughout the UK looking to recognise and award pubs which reach a high level of success in the many aspects it takes to run a good pub serving real ale.

After inviting nominations from branch members, the selection of top contenders of pubs for Pub of the Year, are agreed at a Camra branch meeting.

All local Camra branch members are then invited to vote for the final award. The Isle of Man Camra branch now has more than 400 members.

Pubs don’t have to be picture postcard, unspoilt gems to win a top award. Pubs of all sizes and locations, from sleepy villages, fishing ports, town centre bars, micropubs or back street locals can be exceptional.

The main criteria measured to assess candidates for the Pub of the Year award include quality of real ale, décor and cleanliness, service, community focus and atmosphere and overall impression.

A score for each selected pub against this checklist of criteria is weighted and totted up to arrive at first and runner-up placing.

The groundwork for identifying the 2019 Isle of Man Pub of the Year will shortly start to take place among the Camra branch members.
