A long running photographic society will celebrate a milestone anniversary with a photographic exhibition, which opens this weekend.

The Western Photographic society was first formed 40 years ago, in 1979, and they will mark this with a photographic display entitled ’Our Sunset City’, which pays tribute to their hometown of Peel.

The exhibition will form the main winter and spring exhibition at the House of Manannan, and will consist of more than 200 images taken in and around Peel over the years, by current and past members of the photographic society, including the 18 current members and three junior snappers.

The panels will feature images that show Peel in all weathers, moods and atmospheres., across the seasons.

It will also feature the many sporting and cultural events, pageants, the carnival celebrations that take place along Peel promenade, along with sections on the town architecture and streetscapes.

There will be entire panels showing Viking re-enactments, last year’s Oie Voaldyn festival of fire, many community events, the new soap box derby, beach, events in the Castle and around the Bay and images of traditional and working boats.

Some of the more historical pictures will feature Steam Packet ships in Peel bay, a hovercraft parked up on the foreshore, army landing craft, and a fishing boat beaching, and rescue of its crew, on the Old Baths shore, Traie Fogog.

The earliest photograph in the exhibition was taken in the 1940s and the latest was snapped only two weeks ago.

Fittingly, the exhibtion will also feature images of Peel’s iconic sunsets

The event has been organised by the honorary secretary Dr Patricia Tutt, who has spent recent months sorting the many images and devising the layout for the show.

’We wanted to show our best work on Peel whilst representing all members who submitted images,’ said Dr Tutt.

’We hope everyone will enjoy the result.

’We certainly have a broad range of images for everyone to see.’

The show, which runs from this Saturday week, February 2nd, through to May 12th will be opened by the Director of Manx National Heritage, Edmund Southworth at ceremony held on Sunday, February 3, from 2pm.
