A drag racing event held on Jurby airfield has come to a conclusion following three days of breakneck speed action.
The event saw competitors on two and four wheels compete to be the fastest down the former runway and allowed members of the public with a full driving licence and crash helmet the opportunity to take part.
The weekend started with a drag racing event, which was open to all vehicles and Sunday continued with more drag racing, before the world famous Purple Helmets crashed the party.
Terry Duckworth, organiser of the event, said: ’It was a very good event, we were a bit plagued by the weather.
’Tuesday we just couldn’t run the event we had planned so abandoned the day but the drag racing was brilliant and the Purple Helmets were hilarious.’
The Purple Helmets, as always ’at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour’ performed some of their classic tricks to the excitement of the crowd.
On Sunday, the times were recorded and competitors were able to see how they compared to other enthusiasts. In the class 9.10 event, Alan Morrison Jnr, who last year beat his father in the same event, recorded a winning time of 9.17 seconds on his Suzuki GSXR 1000cc.
Mark Patman on his Kawasaki ZZR was his nearest competitor, recording a time of 9.45 seconds.
The class 11.10, Wheelie Class, Supersport up to 675cc, Supersport Unlimited cc and Top Car saw only one competitor in each, David Crosby, Damien Crook, Lee Woodcock, Stuart Harvey and Henry Sage respectively, who all unsuprisingly romped home to victory.
However, there was quite a battle in the class 11.30 event between Henry Sage in his Porsche GT3 RS, Martin Courage in his Ferrari, Darren Cunningham in his Tesla P90D and Simon Fletcher in his TVR T350.
Henry Sage won with a best time of 11.62 seconds but was followed closely by Martin with 11.69s, Darren with 11.72s and Simon finished with a still impressive 11.81s, outright top seed was Gary Leech with 9.17s.
Monday was for cars only as organisers held a proper track day with timed laps.
The next Straightliners event is at the end of June.
