The organisers of Ramsey’s New Year’s Day dip have announced details of next year’s event.

People jump or run into the sea in many beaches around the island.

One of the most popular is Ramsey’s, which is organised by the town’s RNLI branch.

It’s due to take place on New Year’s Day, of course, at 11am.

The dip raised £1,494 for Ramsey RNLI and Bunscoill Rhumsaa, the town’s primary school.

The ’Chilly Dip’ in its present format has been taking place since 2012 and was originally organised by the Friends of Auldyn School, with Ramsey RNLI providing the venue and safety team.

By September 2013 Auldyn School had merged with Scoill Ree Gorrey to become Bunscoill Rhumsaa, however the association with the local school has been maintained.

In 2014 high winds combined with a high tide meant that it was unsafe for dippers to enter the sea and so the ’Chilly Dip’ became a ’Chilly Hose Down’, with RNLI volunteers hosing the dippers with the hose pipes normally used for washing down the lifeboat.

There had been New Year dips in Ramsey prior to 2013.

For instance, in 2004 when the staff of Cummal Mooar residential home organised a dip in aid of the residents.

For January 1, 2019, Ramsey RNLI volunteer crew together with Ramsey Coastguard will form the safety team, both in an out of the water.

In the boathouse, a gang of RNLI volunteers together with helpers from Bunscoill Rhumsaa will be busy serving refreshments and registering dippers.

At 11am promptly Station Mechanic Ali Clague will give the order for the dippers to run down the lifeboat slipway and launch themselves into the Irish Sea.

Spectators will be welcome.

Peter Whiteway, Ramsey’s town clerk, RNLI branch chairman and dip participant, said: ’The year 2018 was a splendid result for Ramsey’s New Year dip.

’Over the last few years the dip has become a regular community event for the town of Ramsey. The year 2019 will see the eighth Ramsey Chilly Dip, so it is almost a tradition.

’I think we need to say a huge thank you to everybody for their continued support of the town, its lifeboat and its school.’

Dips take place all over the island.
