Organisers of the Coast to Coast Walk have recorded a record-breaking year after hundreds of walkers stomped, strolled and strutted their way from Douglas to Peel.

Almost 600 people from across the island stepped up to the challenge, which was organised by Manx Blind Welfare Society.

The final fundraising total is still being calculated, but already more than £8,000 has been collected for the charity, which looks after the blind and visually impaired community in the Isle of Man.

Participants gathered at the NSC track car park ahead of the starting whistle before setting off with a lap of the outside track to start.

Walkers then followed a picturesque 12-mile route via the Old Heritage Trail, finishing in front of the House of Manannan in Peel.

There was also a second start in St John’s for those who preferred a shorter walk but still wanted to join in the fun and family-friendly atmosphere.

All walkers received a certificate, in addition to discount vouchers for Davison’s Ice Cream - whose team were present at the finish serving iced treats - alongside Quayside Fish and Chip Shop and The Cod and Castle in Peel.

Manx Telecom sponsored the event.

Its chief executive Gary Lamb took part and the first finisher was Manx Telecom database administrator Kevin Edwards, who crossed the line in two hours.

Mr Lamb said: ’The Coast to Coast Walk was a brilliant event with so many families and people of all ages and abilities taking part.

The organisation was superb and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere, even among the keener walkers.

’The Manx Blind Welfare Society does such an important job in supporting the blind and partially-sighted community in the Isle of Man and we were delighted to help them with crucial fundraising in such a difficult year.’

Manx Blind Welfare Society events organiser Debbie Thomson added: ’We have been on a high since the Coast to Coast Walk and that feeling is yet to go away - the atmosphere on the day was absolutely fantastic and there was a real community feel to the event. We’re delighted with the record-breaking number of entries and the wonderful amount raised, with more money still coming in!

’Manx Blind Welfare Society looks after the interests of almost 600 people with serious sight loss, providing a range of services and support to individuals of all ages.’
