Tomorrow they are commemorating the loss 100 years ago of the following:
Private Fred Cannell, aged 27, killed in action in France on September 20. Prior to enlisting, he had been an ironmonger’s assistant.
He had seen considerable fighting in France and Flanders and fought in the Messines battle.
Private Philip Edward Corkish, aged 19, fourth son of Henry Evan Corkish, a former lifeboat coxswain and his wife Margaret. Private Corkish had only been in France four weeks when he was killed in action on September 20. Prior to enlisting he was the youngest member of the Ramsey Courier printing staff. He was employed there for several years and was a popular member of staff.
His brother, Corporal Harry Corkish was killed on October 29, 1916 and is also commemorated on the town’s war memorial.
At 6.30pm tomorrow (September 20), crosses will be placed at the war memorial and a minute’s silence will be observed to mark the anniversary. If there are any relatives who wish to attend the ceremony, they should contact Gemma Kelly at the town hall on 810100.
Members of the public are also welcome to attend.
