A blind woman is fundraising to pay for the training of a guide dog pup.
Mum-of-two Rhiannon Quirk, of Lakeside in Onchan, is raising £5,000 to train a puppy after her guide dog Molly was tragically run over on the Cronk Y Voddy last year.
It is in memory of Molly that Rhiannon, who is registered blind, has decided to raise the money, which will allow her to name a guide pup and supports its training.
Rhiannon met Molly after her dog Indy reached retirement.
She said: ’Molly was gorgeous, had a beautiful playful nature and loved being amongst children which made her a favourite at the guide dog centre on open days.
’She was intelligent and enjoyed routes with variety; she particularly liked finding pelican crossings which she and I made a game from.’
She explained how in the short time Molly was with them, she became part of the family.
Telling her then four-year-old son, Finley, that Molly had died was devastating and the impression she made on him, long lasting. But, out of the sadness of Molly’s death, will come some good.
After the accident, Rhiannon pledged to raise the £5,000 needed to name a pup.
She is now well over half way to that figure and hopes to use the Parish Walk on June 23 as the final push to complete her goal.
She said: ’I don’t intend to do the whole walk, but hopefully we could make it to Peel.’
Helping her achieve her goal is her colleagues at Barclays.
Using the bank’s pound matching charity initiative, Rhiannon will be able to double any money she raises.
She says Barclays is great with her and her new dog, Sandy.
She said: ’While Sandy behaves at work, he can be very much led by his stomach.’
Rhiannon has previously held a charity night at M&Co, a cake sale at work and the school her son attends is holding a dress down day.
